Medicine Hat Tigers secure spot in Memorial Cup final with 3-1 win over London

The Medicine Hat Tigers booked their ticket to the Memorial Cup final Tuesday night after holding off a late London Knights comeback attempt, defeating the Knights 3-1.

Knights winger Kasper Halttunen got London on the board three and a half minutes into the opening frame, capitalizing on an early Tiger penalty.

London carried the one-goal lead into the middle frame, but 5:11 in, Tigers forward Ethan Neutens answered back.

Neutens rifled home a rebound off a Tanner Molendyk point shot, squaring the game at one.

After a back-and-forth second, the game remained tied at one entering the third period.

Early in the final frame, Tigers 20-year-old forward Mathew Ward got Medicine Hat their first lead of the night, sweeping a loose puck past the outstretched pad of Knights netminder Austin Elliot.

Halfway through the third London forward and first round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Easton Cowan, ripped a wrist shot off the crossbar, nearly tying the game at two.

Medicine Hat carried the lead into the dying moment of the third when, with 3:35 left, Tigers forward Hunter St. Martin crushed Jared Woolley into the end boards and got dinged for boarding.

Initially called a five-minute major, the play was reduced to a minor upon review.

The Knights pressed but were unable to beat Meneghin, who was stellar, making 35 saves in the win.

Ryder Ritchie added a late empty net tally with 11 seconds left, securing Medicine Hat a spot in the Memorial Cup final for the first time since 2007.

London will play in the semi-final on Friday against the winner of Wednesday night’s round-robin finale between the Rimouski Oceanic and Moncton Wildcats.

Medicine Hat is now one win away from its first Memorial Cup title since 1988.

The final will be played Sunday night from Rimouski’s Sun Life Financial Colliseum with puckdrop set for 5 p.m. MST.
