City of Medicine Hat preparing transition for Animal Pound Services

Jun 5, 2025 | 10:15 AM

The City of Medicine Hat is keeping some front line staff from APARC to help with the transition of the pound, starting on Sunday.

The contract with Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres is over as of Saturday.

The front line staff will continue to provide daily care to animals currently in the facility with help from a Registered Veterinary Technician.

The pound will open to the public daily between noon and 4 until June 11.

Construction upgrades starting June 12 will mean appointments only into July.

In a release, the city says this work will enhance sanitation measures in the facility, and will maintain safety and well-being of animals and facility staff.

The work is anticipated to last until the end of June.

The City will also issue a Request for Proposal to determine if other animal welfare organizations have interest and ability to either operate the full facility or administer a program of fostering and adoption.

The City expects to issue the RFP soon.

This transition period is expected to take 90 days.
