So-han Mak
October 31st, 1937 – April 6th, 2025
Mrs. So-han Mak passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta peacefully on April 6th, 2025, a day after greeting the visitation groups from St John’s Presbyterian and MH Chinese Alliance Church, and her eldest brother Dr. Au with his daughter & granddaughter, Peggy & Anya, from Calgary – with niece Alycia Au, god-daughter Adele B. Lee, representatives of MHCAC Jo and Grace Luk, and husband Siew by her side. She is survived by her beloved husband, Siew Luen Mak; her brother, Dr. Chi Cheong Au; youngest brother, Ki Cheong Au (Grace) of Lethbridge; younger sister, Po-han Sung of Hong Kong; youngest sister, Mo-han Ma (Vincent) of Calgary; another younger brother, Wing Cheong Au (Emily) of Philadelphia, USA, brother-in-laws Daniel Mak (Anne), Henry Mak, sister-in-laws Karina Mak, Gigi Mak and Connie Chan.
So-han was born in Guangdong, China on October 31st, 1937, and moved to Hong Kong at a very young age. She finished her high school education in Hong Kong, then continued her study in Normal University in Taiwan. So-han returned to Hong Kong after receiving her bachelor’s degree in education in 1959. She met Siew in the school she was teaching and found that they had similar “tastes” in a lot of hobbies and activities: such as classical music, calligraphy, painting and swimming. They were married in 1963, and moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1971. Four years later, due to Siew’s change of jobs, they settled in Medicine Hat.
So-han always believed that human beings are created by God to help maintain good order for this world and make it more joyful, she often tried her best to spend her leisure to contribute her skill in music, knitting, cooking, sewing, etc. through the Church’s “group activities”, such as singing, choir conducting/accompanying and the eagerness of providing a “helping hand” to those in need. So-han’s fun loving nature, kindness and enthusiasm in music, art, cooking (all with skill) attracted nieces and nephews, from as far away as Hong Kong, to visit her in Medicine Hat. They are Peggy, Alick, Erica, Aaron, Alycia, Fiona, Rita, Raymond, Janet, Diana, Felicia, Amanda,…to name a few.
The funeral services will be held in St. John’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, sympathy can be expressed through donation to St. John’s Presbyterian Church at 504 2 St SE, Medicine Hat, AB; Medicine Hat Chinese Alliance Church at 870 4th St SE, Medicine Hat, AB or Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
