1924 ~ Anne Scheuer (née Denis) ~ 2025
With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce that Anne Scheuer (née Denis) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 100 years. Anne will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Charlotte; her grandchildren, Sharon (Steve), Stefan (Heather), Vincent; and her great grandchildren, Natalie, Isabel and Lacey; as well as many cherished and deeply loved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family. Anne was predeceased by her husband, William “Bill” Scheuer; parents, Valentine Jr. and Barbara Denis; sister, Marjorie “Marge” Gunderson; and son-in-law, Edwin. Anne was also preceded by her beloved pets; their fun and loyal presence will always be part of the family’s fondest memories. Anne was born on August 17, 1924, in Prelate, Saskatchewan. Her parents dotingly brought Anne home to the family farm just east of Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. Some of her early years saw the family move across the Prairies – briefly to Onoway, Alberta and Beiseker, Alberta, and eventually back to Fox Valley. At just 18, in the midst of WWII, Anne set off on her own to Taber, Alberta, where she worked at Ken Howe & Co. Hardware and lived with her Aunt Maggie, Uncle Joe, and cousins. Three years later, she moved to Medicine Hat to live with her father and sister, where she worked at Black’s Hardware. Fate stepped in at a dance, where a dear friend, Emma, introduced Anne to Bill. Their romance blossomed, and they were married a few years later on September 10, 1949. Anne and Bill built their life together in Medicine Hat; first on 7th Avenue where they both lovingly welcomed their daughter, Charlotte, in August 1956, and later in their new family forever home on Bullivant Crescent, built in 1957. Life in Medicine Hat carried on for Anne and her family with several successful businesses in auto repair, tractors and implements, fuel, and other similar interests. After selling their garage business, Anne and Bill acquired a mixed farm and other lands in the area which included a respectable hog operation and growing a sprawling garden. Retirement brought even more joy, as Anne and Bill bought a cabin in Elkwater, spent time fishing, and explored new places through travel. As a couple, they took up golfing, becoming members of both the Medicine Hat and Elkwater Golf Clubs. It didn’t take long for Anne to develop a “healthy” addiction to golf…even on TV with many strokes tallied across many at-home scorecards, she kept quite a tally of all the top players throughout the years. What a golf-a-holic. Anne had always been very sporty in her earlier years and also became an avid bowler in later life – easily making new friends and filling up her mantle with bowling hardware. Music was Anne’s prized spice of life and a special medicine for whatever her day brought her. Big band was her favourite genre. Anne was well versed in all thing’s music, and although not an expert player on one particular instrument, Anne enjoyed learning all she could and kept up with the area orchestras that she and Bill were a part of. Anne was a wonderful entertainer, known for her charisma, her love of cooking and baking (especially meals on-the-fly for everyone who came by), and she was always up for a game of cards or competitive game of Yahtzee. Anne and Bill’s welcoming and open door was world renowned. The good times rolled, and amazing memories were made from the moment you rang the doorbell! Anne will be remembered for her humour and jokes, sensibility, practical nature, strong work ethic, and her commitment to family and friends. A very sincere thank-you and our deepest gratitude to those who provided their very best compassionate care for Anne in her final chapters of life. Your gracious efforts and humility will not be forgotten. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, #1 Dunmore Road S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta for a first viewing on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 7-9pm, and a second viewing on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 1:30-2:25pm.
