Alberta teachers taking strike vote June 5-8

Jun 6, 2025 | 2:32 PM

Alberta teachers are currently taking a strike vote.

The vote, which runs June 5-8, followed up the strike authorization vote which took place at the end of May, and saw 99 per cent vote in favour.

Nearly 38,000 teachers cast online ballots between May 22 and 26.

But this vote, pending the result, would actually give teachers the ability to strike.

“Since we’re currently in collective bargaining, teachers across the province who are employed by public, separate or francophone school boards are taking part in a strike vote from June 5-8,” confirms Heather Grant, Alberta Teachers’ Association communications officer.

“If teachers vote in favour of a strike, the Association’s Provincial Executive Council will then determine the details of any possible strike action. Teachers would then have 120 days to initiate job action and must give 72 hours notice beforehand. At any point during this process, an acceptable resolution may be reached with the bargaining association of the province’s school boards.”

Results are anticipated by Wednesday.

The ATA confirms this after multiple school divisions sent messages to parents notifying them of the vote.

In a June 4 email to parents from Red Deer Public Schools, the division notes it is not the employer, nor involved in this bargaining. That would be the provincial government, and specifically the Teacher Employer Bargaining Association.

At 120 days of validity, a vote in favour of striking could result in a strike before the end of the school year, or one that takes place when school starts up again in September.
