Agnes Cora Caroline Henderson (DeValter)
1932 – 2025
It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Agnes Cora Caroline Henderson on Saturday May 10, 2025 at the age of 93. Agnes was born February 13, 1932, in Medicine Hat Alberta to Sante and Amelia DeValter. She grew up in Irvine and Medicine Hat, Alberta. She married Ron Henderson in 1952 and later that year they moved to Eureka, California where Ron worked installing fire alarms. Ron and Agnes moved back to Medicine Hat in 1953 to take over the Koffee Kup corner store from her parents due to their failing health. Years later, Agnes and Ron built a larger store in the same location which was known as Ron’s Grocery. They remained in the grocery business until 1975.
Agnes started working outside the home and store in 1965. She had various jobs starting as a car hostess at Dog’n Suds, a teller at CIBC, and an accountant at Macleods. In 1970, she returned to work at the grocery store so Ron could manage the water well drilling rigs they owned. After they sold the rig business, Agnes returned to work at Macleods and later she went to work at A. Kulpe Karpet. She left work to volunteer with Canadian Crossroad and in June of 1987 she went to Swaziland, Southern Africa to volunteer as an English as a second language teacher. She greatly enjoyed this experience and would often reminisce about her time in Swaziland. She returned to Medicine Hat in 1988 and went back to work at A. Kulpe Lumber until ill health forced her to retire. Agnes loved to volunteer and helped out at Scouts Canada, Worlds of Women and various other organizations.
Agnes is survived by her children, Lynn (Mike) Durbeniuk, Rud (Doreen) Henderson, Laurie (Trish) Henderson, Kevin (Patty) Henderson, Debbie (Wayne) Keetley and Randy (Rose) Henderson; seventeen grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Grant Henderson; her parents, Sante and Amelia DeValter; her brother and sister-in law, Tino and Marg DeValter.
We would like to thank Teeoda, MasterPiece and River Ridge for the care they provided Mom during her later years.
Out of respect for her wishes there will be no formal funeral service. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
