Allen Reuer of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Doreen Reuer, passed away on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at the age of 90 years at St. Joseph’s Hospice. He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years (August 6), Doreen. He is also lovingly remembered by his children, Gail Lantz, Arlene Reuer (Ellison Smith), Darrell Reuer, and Pam Ehret; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey (Hazel) Reuer; sister, Rita (LaVerne) Roth; brothers-in-law, Alvin Schneider, Howard (Shirley) Schneider; Gerald (Marilyn) Schneider; Godchild, Rena Roth, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Allen was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mary Reuer; in-laws, Andrew and Amelia Schneider; brother, Norman Reuer; and brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Violet Fischer.
Allen was born on September 1, 1934, at his grandparents’ house in Hilda, Alberta, to parents Fred and Mary Reuer. He was the oldest of four children; Norman, Harvey, and Rita followed. He grew up on the family farm, attended Echodale and Maple Tree schools up to Grade 7, and then helped at home on the farm.
He married Doreen Schneider on August 6, 1955. Following their marriage, Allen farmed with his dad. After two years, they purchased and moved to his maternal grandparents (March) homestead in the Hilda area, continuing to farm with his dad for a few more years. Allen, along with Doreen, farmed and raised their four children through good and bad crop years. The years when it was difficult to make ends meet, Allen worked at various jobs to pay the bills. Although at times, things were tough, farming and country living were always enjoyed. Allen’s passion was farming, which he did with a great deal of precision and pride. At the age of 65, he retired and rented out his farmland. They continued to live on the farm, enjoying life without all the work. After moving to the city in 2010, Allen and Doreen regularly visited the farm, always interested in the crops and happenings.
Allen was community-minded, volunteering many years in the Hilda Community and in their new community of Park Meadows Estates, when they moved to the city. Their choice of purchasing in this new community proved to be a good one, still the small community feel, making new friends, and attending community activities. Allen and Doreen enjoyed traveling to various destinations, the highlights being Europe and a European River Cruise. During their younger years and into retirement, they liked to camp and fish with family and friends, the longest trip being to Alaska. They met regularly with their long-time friends and family during their retirement years. He was fond of visits from children and grandchildren, and they were always appreciated. Allen enjoyed golfing for several years after retiring, and then he took up playing pool, almost daily, at their clubhouse, which he very much enjoyed.
“I had a good life”, was a phrase he shared often during his last hospital/hospice stay. Thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for the exceptional care during Allen’s final days.
